PR Running Class

Most runners have heard that strength training is one of the best ways to improve performance & prevent injuries, but many don't know where to start. We created this class 10 years ago to do just that, & continue evolving the program based on classes' feedback & new running research. Our goal is to safely improve your stability & power to increase your running performance while staying healthy!  Scroll for more info or join our email list to be the first to hear about new classes.

Reach your Goals with PR Class

Run Faster

Besides smart training, safely practicing strength & plyometric exercises are the best way to get faster & hit new PRs.

Reduce Injuries

We can't prevent all injuries yet, but growing evidence shows that strength training is one of the best ways to help avoid them.

Run Forever

Adding a little strength & mobility work is probably the best way to keep you running well as you age.

Free Energy

Stronger tendons can return ~50% energy with each step (take that 4% shoes!). We start improving tendon health in week 1.

Live Better & Longer

People with a high VO2 max live longer, & so do people with more muscle mass! Adding resistance exercise can be your fountain of youth.

Save Time

Our goal is to focus on the minimum training necessary for benefits so you can spend more time on the roads & minimal time in the gym.

Flexibility & Mobility

We'll discuss the research about flexibility for runners & our mobility guide will help you test & improve your running specific flexibility.

Strong Bones

Weight lifting & plyometrics are better at building stronger bones than running alone, helping to prevent stress fractures.

My friend Timothy Hill shot this beautiful video for us several years and several name changes ago! Until we get around to a newer video, I’ll keep using my limited tech skills to “fix” our class name from running strong, to power running, and finally to PR Running!! Really hoping this name can stick around! 😂

Class Testimonials

Cortney H.

Track & Cross Country Coach

"I have big goals/dreams and I want to thank Kasey & Rachelle for helping me get one step closer to these goals...My current workouts from PR have made me an overall better runner and coach. I expected to get stronger and learn how to prevent injuries. What I didn't expect was having this knowledge of many different exercises and their importance helping me to do a better job developing training programs for my XC/Track & field athletes. I have been a runner for over 20 years and I feel like I know more about running now than ever before. I highly recommend this program to every runner no matter if your goals are casual to trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The skills you develop from this program will make you a healthier and better runner."

Mark A.

General Manager

"Just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know how helpful the handouts and videos are. Excellent quality and easy to follow. Also, Katie did an EXCELLENT job on Tuesday, she wonderful."

Corey S.

Registered Nurse

"Power Running is everything I was looking for. I started out looking for a personal trainer that knew how to help runners and was recommended to this class. Power Running class has taught me not to be afraid to lift heavy and how to slow down and do the small exercises too. Kasey is very helpful and knowledgeable and is always willing to answer any question I have.
Since starting class I have been able to take 17 minutes off of my half (marathon) time and an hour off my full time. Power Running has helped me see I can be the runner I have dreamed about being. Any runner who hasn't taken the class or isn't strength training is missing out."

Want a sneak peek at our handouts?

This Pre-Class Workout is our most basic starting workout. The week 1 workout is a step up from each of these exercises, and also continues to build on the info contained in the first few pages.

Ready to improve your running?

Our email list is the best way to hear about new classes in your area. No spam, just the first option to join new intro classes. It also helps us gauge interest in a given area to offer a class. When registrations are open to the public, we will post that here as well.

Heads Up!! Some people have been surprised to learn that this class is Progressive! Every week gets a little harder, building on the one before it. Our handouts are formatted so that you can also do a version of the workout at home if needed, but I don't recommend signing up for our in-person class if you will miss several weeks in a row. If you want a casual class that you can drop into on occasion, we are not the class for you. (Something to consider, if you can just drop into a "strength" class at any point, you may want to ask yourself if it's actually making you stronger.)

Other Locations

We've also held previous classes in New Orleans & Metairie, LA; & Vancleave, MS. We may be able to have more classes in these locations if there is enough demand. We're also considering starting a class in Huntsville, AL. Joining the email list helps us determine when & where to hold classes. We're also working to build an online class platform, and we'd like to have some beta testers for that project.

Interested in hosting a PR Class?

Hosting a PR Class can be a great way to bring awareness of your physical therapy practice or personal training business to runners while earning extra income at the same time. We pay our instructors well & pay rent to each gym we use. We're willing to discuss hosting class, but are only interested in working with top-notch therapists and trainers who have a passion for helping runners, a background in strength & weight lifting, & access to gym space. We can possibly modify our program to fit your gym & equipment if needed. Email us below to start a discussion.

PR Advanced Class

At the request of many intro class graduates, we added an advanced class option around 2017. Any runner who completes the intro class has the skills & strength necessary to join our advanced group to continue making gains in their power & stability.
Advanced class meets every Wednesday at 6:00 PM at The Block Fit in Louisiana and at 6:15 and 7:15 PM at Whole Strength PT in Virginia. Since there is no starting & ending point of this class, registration works a little differently:

In-Person Subscription

Our most popular option, this subscription is $70 in LA & $80 in VA, per month. You can attend the in-person workout each week & you'll receive the weekly workout plus a lighter weekend workout each week by email in a format similar to intro class. Currently we are at max capacity. Please Email me if you'd like to join our waiting list.

Online Subscription

Our online subscription for $25 per month will send the same workouts the in-person class gets. While every weekend workout is designed to be done at home, the weekly workouts include both the gym equipment exercises & at-home substitutions. You can have access to our programming even if you can't attend the class.

Drop-In Classes

Our drop-in rate is $20 per class. Our coaches keep track of who comes & we'll bill you for each class at the end of the month. Great option for those who want to try things out once or twice, or can only attend so often.

Currently we have availability to add runners to our advanced class at both locations. Email me if you're interested, kasey@prmdrunning.com

PR Class

Our History & Philosophy

The long version: PR Running Intro Class (previously Power Running) was partly born out of my own frustrations of dealing with injuries - sciatica (not running related) & runner's knee (totally running related) - and the lack of improvement with typical medical advice & PT. I was very fortunate to do my Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency at UVA where I learned from some of the biggest experts in running medicine:
Dr. Robert Wilder, founder of the UVA Runner's Clinic & co-author of the textbook of Running Medicine
Eric Magrum, PT, DPT, also a co-author of Running Medicine, & the PT who taught me how to fix my back & knees.
Jay Dicharry, PT, director of the UVA SPEED Clinic gait lab, author of Anatomy for Runners & Running Rewired, & inventor of the MOBO Board, & my biggest mentor.
After residency, I quickly realized that most physicians & PTs were out of date when it came to treating runners. It pains me to hear that so many docs still tell patients to "just stop running" or that some therapist still focus on passive treatments & stretching to treat an injury. Even the better therapists are still limited by insurance & time constraints - if your doctor's order & the insurance company says to only treat the knee, then your PT may not be able to also work on improving the foot, hip strength, & gait mechanics necessary to really help your knee.

The great therapists I worked with taught me two more important lessons that have strongly influenced PR Class:

1. How you perform an exercise matters just as much as what exercises you choose. Technique matters! If our ultimate goal is to move better, then we should practice moving better in each exercise we perform. This is why we work with top notch sports PTs to coach our classes since they are experts in movement & are skilled at correcting faulty movements.

2. Progression! A part of me dies inside every time I send a patient for hip strengthening and they return to clinic still doing side lying clamshell exercises after 6 weeks of PT. "Oh, but we did use a heavier resistance band." Look, the clamshell may be the proper starting exercise for some people, we've even used it in class, but there are many more exercises that better challenge the glutes and put them to use in much more functional positions.

This is why every week of class progresses. We either add reps, add weight, or switch to a more challenging exercise altogether. If you are in therapy or working with a personal trainer and your exercises/resistance/reps haven't progressed, ask yourself if you are putting in enough effort, and ask your PT why aren't they progressing you?

Finally, performing dozens of clinical running gait analysis on a wide variety of runners gave me a few more insights:

1. The majority of runners can benefit from the same exercise progressions.

2. About half of the runners I worked with didn't feel comfortable or weren't accountable to do their exercises on their own.

Putting all of this together, it was clear that a running specific strength class is the most cost effective way to help a large number of runners learn proper strength, mobility, & plyometric training in a safe environment.

Our first class, Running Strong, started in fall of 2015 & consisted of two 8 week blocks that built on each other. At some point we shortened that to a single 12 week class. For the most part, we've had a class every spring, summer, and fall since then, sometimes up to 3 classes at a time including in Baton Rouge, Zachary, & New Orleans, LA, and also a few classes in Vancleave, MS. In 2019 we rebranded to Power Running, & now my lawyer has advised changing our name yet again, so we are transitioning to just PR Running class. We've also trimmed our intro class down to just 10 weeks.

At the request of previous class grads, we also added our Advanced class in either 2016 or 2017. These runners saw the benefit of strengthening, but wanted to continue it in an environment similar to Intro class. Strength training is similar to running in that you can make noticeable progress with 10 weeks of following a good plan, but you can make tremendous progress with months & years of consistent work. And our advanced class members have seen that play out while avoiding major injuries while still hitting new PRs year after year.

We've also started testing the waters of an at-home version of the course since all of our handouts include exercise substitutions in case you don't have squat rack or other equipment at home. While updating this to a web-based program is going to take some time, I'm willing to offer the course using our Google Doc format for now. Please email me if you're interested, kasey@prmdrunning.com.
